OpenAI Adds EU-Compliant Watermark to AI-Generated Text

The company is introducing a machine-readable identifier to comply with the EU AI Act, making it harder to pass off AI-generated content as human-written.

OpenAI, the AI research organization, is rolling out a new feature to its AI models, including ChatGPT and Codex, to comply with the European Union's AI Act. The feature, called textGrain, adds an invisible watermark to AI-generated text that can be detected by machine.

The watermark is an opt-in feature for now, and users globally can choose to enable it starting today. Initially, this feature will be accessible to EU residents only.

The EU AI Act mandates AI-generated text contain a machine-readable marker indicating it was generated by AI. OpenAI's textGrain watermark meets this requirement, making it harder for users to pass off AI-generated content as human-written.

OpenAI's textGrain watermarking has been tested and found to 'match or exceed' the performance of other approaches, such as SynthID for text.

Why it matters

This move highlights the growing importance of transparency in AI-generated content and the need for companies to comply with regulations aimed at promoting accountability and trust.

What's next

The feature will roll out to users in the European Union first, and it's unclear when or if it will become the global default.
